Course of Studies in `Naturwissenschaftliche Informatik'
(Computing for Science) at the University of Bielefeld
Karsten Loer
and
Peter B. Ladkin
Students achieve a `Diplom' (Diploma)
in Computing for Science.
Grades are given for exams on selected courses only.
Studies are divided into
- `Grundstudium' which leads to a `Vordiplom' (comparable to
Lower Division plus junior year in a US University); then
- `Hauptstudium' (comparable to senior year plus Master's
coursework) and then
- `Diplomarbeit' (Comparable to Master's thesis).
These three requirements together lead to a Full `Diplom' degree (that may be
considered to be equivalent to a Master's Degree in US or UK).
An individual examination consists of:
in Computing for Science: & one half-hour individual oral
examination by a \\
& Professor with a qualified assistant.\\
in Minor subject: & one half-hour individual oral
examination by a \\
& Professor with a qualified assistant.\\
Vordiplom:
Students are required to take and pass:
- one exam in Computer Science I and II,
- one exam in Computer Science III and IV,
- one exam in two courses taken from the list Math I, II, III and IV,
- one exam in either Biology, Physics or Chemistry.
Diplom:
Students are required to take and pass exams in
| major subject: | Computing for Science
|
| minor subject: | one of Biology, Physics, Chemistry
|
or
| major subject: | one of Biology, Physics, Chemistry
|
| minor subject: | Computing for Science
|
Exams must cover the contents of at least 6 and at most 12 total
`Semesterwochenstunden' (week-hours)
of course/laboratory work each. A total of 40 week-hours is required
to be covered by all exams.
Major
Major subject exams are:
- two exams from intensive courses
(4 week-hours plus 2 week-hours laboratory work):
- Pattern Recognition
- Neural Nets
- Compiler Construction
- Artificial Intelligence/Knowledge Based Systems
- Robotics
- Computer System Specification and Verification
- one speciality exam (material from a selection of 3 to 6
courses of 2 week-hours each)
Minor:
Minor subject exams are:
- one exam from the contents of general `Hauptstudium'
courses in the chosen minor (totalling 6-12 week-hours)
- one exam in a speciality subject, consisting of 3-6
related courses totalling 6-12 week-hours
Diplomarbeit
After `Grundstudium' and `Hauptstudium', a student completes his/her
`Diplom' by writing a thesis in a time period of 6 months. This
thesis must contain original work.

Other Studies
In addition to exam work for the `Diplom', students may audit
courses and seminars in which they are not necessarily examined.
They may receive a `Schein' (certificate of successful completion)
for successful participation, or they may simply listen as they
wish.
Conditions for receiving a `Schein' are determined by the Professor
in charge of the individual course and correspond to a grade of
`satisfactory' or above.
